The skip bins we were seeing just about everywhere we traveled while in Australia were all filled to capacity and had all kinds of things in them–mostly housewares and furniture. Apartment renters were just up and leaving everything behind and becoming skips, a situation that is becoming worse and worse these days what with jobs becoming scarce, we were told by our tour guide.

Sometimes the maintenance and custodial workers get to go through these things and can take them for their own use, but a lot of times the people were so financially strapped who had these apartments there is little of value left in them when the ditch them. Probably the best things to take in this regard would be canned goods, things that have a still-active shelf life rather than outdated ones.

Seeing so many skip bins can cause a person to wonder where exactly do the skips end up living? Who would take them in to their apartments, seeing that they didn’t pay their rent on time at their previous places they rented?
